Description: This program aims at studying and discussing the contribution of the military orders in peripheral territories to the boosting of the development of European globalization (12th-16th centuries). Coming from the eastern Mediterranean, these institutions spread across the European territory and constituted a totally innovative challenge in the Middle Ages. Featured by a unique religiosity, of commitment to the laity, they became involved in an extraordinary way in religious, political and social matters. They promoted mobility in Europe and in the surrounding Mediterranean spaces for devotional and charitable reasons, heritage management, war, political, and religious borders, contributing to multiculturalism and to creating an identity of that world. They had a strong relationship with the monarchies and the papacy and were attractive from a social point of view. For all these reasons, military orders are one of the pillars of present-day Europe and have been the subject of study by various scholars, but to a very different degree in different academic traditions throughout Europe.

This course is an intensive training for students from various disciplinary areas and a challenge based on the study of the historical past of two European peripheries (Iberia, and Baltic). It benefits from the deep research and teaching experience of the professors, who are experts in this area of research. By involving these three higher education institutions, it adds value and allows for the creation of learning and teaching conditions that exceed the capacity of any one of them. The same can be said in relation to the joint involvement of students from different institutions, who will contribute with their different experiences to boost training and problematize the issues addressed, both during physical mobility and during the online cooperation modules. For these reasons, it is a unique and innovative program in the academic context.
